Previously Unsung
Hero This morning an 18-wheeler roared down Old Woman Springs
Road toward Yucca Valley. A common enough site, except this one was on fire.
Scott, the manager of the Yucca Valley Circle K store shuddered as the
truck turned into ant stopped at the store's Union 76 gas pumps. "I was scared,
and wanted to go to the back office and hide." Scott told me, as he was
anticipating a massive gasoline explosion. "But I grabbed the store's fire
extinguishers and ran to put the fire out."
Three fire extinguishers
later, he switched to the water hose and the fire was extinguished just in time
for the Fire Department's arrival. They patted Scott on the back and told him
he'd done a good job.
The story didn't hit the local newspaper, which
probably didn't know about it, but I think Scott acted heroically so am
reporting it here.
I'm proud of you, son.

Graduation Season A grand daughter graduated from
preschool today. It was a darling ceremony with the kids singing several songs
and telling what they'd learned, one or two at a time, over the microphone.
Let's hope it's the first of many graduations; this, elementary, jr. high, high
school, community college, college...

Best
wishes to all 2002 graduates. I was surprised and rather touched to see that on
June 8 one of the local churches, which has an Amphitheater, is holding a
baccalaureate for all Morongo Basin high school graduates. I found out about it
from a flyer given out at Del Taco. This is the 14th year they've done this,
and the reason is the 1988 court decision prohibiting our public schools from
offering a spiritual program. Seniors are asked to attend in their caps and
gowns.
It's wonderful that this traditional spiritual ceremony is being
offered to our young adults while maintaining the separation of Church and
State.
